Annus Covidis
Inspired by the high contrast light and shade and drama of 16th/17th c. Baroque art, the work transports the central figure of the reference piece to the mid 17th century and explores the immediately contemporary themes of isolation, solitude and uncertainty in a similar composition to its predecessor. Light comes in from a full moon through a window created from the suggestion of an aperture, or frame, in the reference, the cool light causing shadows and clashing with the warm but ineffectual glow of a candle. The figure, neutral in expression but resting her head wearily on a propped fist, nurses her only comforts, a drink, a candle and 2020’s lockdown treat of choice, a loaf of banana bread.
Presented in a Larson-Juhl antiqued gilt frame in a Baroque style.
Original Artwork, oil on canvas, framed
size including frame 26” x 22” (660mm x 560mm) approx
unmounted painting measures 16” x 12” (406mm x 305mm) approx
